![]() ![]() The drive-thru only restaurant known for its biscuits – and the traffic jam it can cause on some mornings as customers waiting to place their order file onto Franklin Street – has been a mainstay for generations of UNC students and Chapel Hillians alike. We drove onto the lot at 8:53am and exited at 8:56am.Reaction poured in on social media last month as smoke billowed from Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen in Chapel Hill. The biscuit and gravy was served inside a foam box and came with a set of disposable eating utensils, also bagged. Each biscuit was individually wrapped and placed inside a white paper bag with napkins. The standard biscuit sandwiches are plenty here, but if you like ordering the restaurant specials chock-full of ingredients, the Bad Grampa is worth trying at least once. While it wasn't bad, I actually wasn't a huge fan of Sunrise's chicken and prefer Chick-fil-A's more seasoned, moist, tender, and better-tasting chicken in their chicken biscuits. As for the Bad Grampa, it tastes how it sounds. I wouldn't have minded a smidge more gravy. The sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit and the biscuit and gravy were just fantastic. I'm generally not a fan of country ham because I think it's too salty. My wife likes country ham and enjoyed Sunrise's version. The biscuits were greasy and a bit messy, but filling, satisfying, and hit the spot. The biscuits were super fresh, soft, fluffy, buttery, slightly crumbly, and a little floury/powdery on the outside. In the end, it really comes down to what biscuits you typically like. Those two were clearly better to me than the country ham and Bad Grampa biscuits. My wife liked all four biscuits equally while the favorites were clear for me: I liked the sausage, egg and cheese biscuit the best followed by the biscuit and gravy. Overall, my wife and I thought these biscuits were delicious. The Bad Grampa Biscuit is a chicken biscuit with bacon, egg, and cheese. * Country ham, egg, and cheese biscuit - $3.79 * Sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit - $3.79 They churned orders out quick without a hiccup. During our visit, it ran like a well-oiled machine. ![]() They do serve sides like hash browns ($1.19) and grits ($1.59) as well as hot dogs ($2.39) and basic sandwiches and burgers (all $3.99 or less). Nothing surprising nor inventive, just traditional Southern comfort food. Biscuits start as low as $1.19 and can get expensive as $7.48 if you order their special "Bad Grampa" biscuit. The menu is simple and the prices are very affordable. They open early (6am, Monday-Saturday and 7am, Sunday) and close early (2:30pm, daily). Sunrise is open during breakfast and lunch hours only. We showed up close to 9am on a Saturday and there were only two cars ahead of us though a steady stream of customers quickly built up behind us. We've read about and seen pictures of the lines for this place, but I guess we got lucky. While the Louisburg location has seating for on-site dining, this location does not. This review is for the only other location which is situated in a small freestanding building in Chapel Hill, north of UNC's campus. The original restaurant opened in 1977-78 in Louisburg, northeast of Raleigh. I found Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen thanks to Yelp, but this restaurant has been around decades before Yelp even existed. Over all, this is a classic breakfast joint in Chapel Hill. ![]() There is no inside seating, however if you drive across the parking lot past the Indian restaurant, there are a few picnic tables if you're so inclined to dine outside! It's a very simple establishment, drive thru only. I sometimes add a piece of chicken to the gravy biscuits, because the chicken is just that good. ![]() I have been known to swap the regular cheese on the Bad Grampa for pimento cheese - so good! I really enjoy their gravy biscuits as well. It's a huge portion of perfectly breaded chicken breast, topped with egg, cheese, and a lot of bacon! The biscuits themselves are buttery and crumbly in all the right ways. For those who don't know, Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen was featured in the Johnny Knoxville film, Bad Grandpa! That's where this glorious biscuit sandwich gets its name. But even if it didn't, Sunrise biscuits are totally worth the wait. Don't be deterred by the long line, that's almost guaranteed to be backed up into the road. This is always one of my favorite stops when I'm in town. ![]()
